Got tips on hosts where Koken is verified to run smoothly?

Share what host your using...
And if you can supply the setup found in your Koken settings, and what country your host is located...

http://www.surpasshosting.com/ref/29910 (Yes, I know, it is a referral link, so that I might make something out of it)

Information about the server hosting this installation.

Server operating system Linux
Webserver software Apache
Image processing GD bundled (2.1.0 compatible)

The package I use there is no longer offered, so I'm not sure what deal it is I'm using. I pay something around $70 for their US hosting. They also have UK hosting, but that is more expensive.

City Network
  • Price: 740SEK/$96/400,98PLN per year
  • Space: 250GB
  • traffic: 500GB
  • Domains: Unlimited
  • Sub-Domains: Unlimited
  • MySQL: 100
  • MSQL: 2
  • Email accounts: 1000
  • Mailbox limit: 10GB
  • FFmpeg supported
https://www.citynetworkhosting.com/shared-hosting/

My config (default settings)
  • PHP: Version 5.5.7-1+sury.org~precise+1
  • MySQL: Version 5.5.41-log
  • Server operating system: Linux
  • Webserver software: Apache/2.2.22 (Ubuntu)

Only "issue" I got is this: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=16
That I'm rather sure is host related, since it's working on my local dev server…
UPDATE: City Networks are looking in to this issue as we speak, hopefully it will be resolved during the day!

Or run your own host on a macmini with the server app installed, register a domain name only for as little as 10 euro/year, get free signed certificates at startssl.com.

I don't know much about web hosting or hosts, but had heard good things about DreamHost so went with them. They were also on the Koken recommendation list, so figured all the better.

I was running PhP 5.4 but saw that Dreamhost recommended updating to 5.5 at the least and 5.6 as optimal because they are EOL'ng 5.4 I just updated to 5.6Fast, and wow, what an immediate difference in speed for loading the site!

Dreamhost is a U.S. host and I prepaid $71.50 for the first year as a special. If they let me renew for the same price I will, otherwise it's about $90 for the year.

Hosted on SSD's
Free domain name for life
Unlimited domains
Unlimited storage and bandwidth

I believe that they run on Ubuntu Linux with Apache

Here's the site: https://www.dreamhost.com/hosting/

A small update from "your truly": my recommendation to using City Network as host for Koken...
Forget it! :x :x

Now I'm instead looking around for a new host: that can offer what I see as "normal" instead of replying on every request/question "Sorry but we cant offer that since that would break the shared environment security and uptime"

So, if you have any further recommendations for me to check out: keep em coming...

Been long time user of 1and1.com for web hosting long before adopting Koken. Seems to be one of the better services I found and reasonably priced. Support is decent and their dashboard is easy to use. Speed seems on par and better than some others I've worked with such a GoDaddy. They also have Koken as an option for instant web site build in their software directory.

PHP: Version 5.4.45
MySQL: Version 5.1.73-log
Server operating system: Linux
Webserver software: Apache
Image processing: GD bundled (2.1.0 compatible)
FFmpeg: Not installed
Memory limit: 256MB
Upload file size limit: 64MB
EXIF/IPTC parsing: Supported

I could probably update the PHP version but things are working fine so I've not really attempted to upgrade it.

After an interessting support ticket orgy with my host i can say that i do not recommed tophoster.de.

Pricing is very attractive and speed is ok. Features are pretty well, if you take the low price into account.

In their package you get:
  • 4 .de domains
  • 10 GB of space for your website plus 10 GB for your mails
  • unlimited traffic
  • 50 MySQL databases (v5.5x)
  • 10 cron jobs
  • php 5.2, 5.3, 5.4, 5.5, 5.6 and 7
  • memory limit is up to 256 MB
  • max execution time is up to 120 seconds
  • same goes for max input time
  • and post max size and upload max filesize is up to 128 MB
  • and all the common features like python, SSI, 25 ftp accounts, awstats and custom error pages

But wait! Custom error pages? This is where it gets really nasty if you are using koken or any other CMS that relies on using /error as a path to their error pages. Tophoster wisely uses a global Apache alias in order to redirect anything that refers to yourdomain.com/error to the built in apache error pages. You cannot overwrite this behaviour with .htaccess or other methods.

In such a case I normally I send a mail to the support describing the issue and they will reconfigure my vhost in apache. But tophoster just says they cannot do that, since they had to globally change the alias!

I really hope that this was just the answer of first level support. If i get such an answer from an admin, then I'd grab my stuff and run away asap. Less knowledge of how an apache works is barely possible.

They usually need 24h to respond to your mail and and in half of the mails you receive standard replies. Giving you the feeling they haven't even read your mail, instead they just pick a keyword and give you a standard answer.

So if you need a really cheap host with unqualified support and are willing to take the downsides you get a really good package for less than 3 € per month. But as soon as you need something special they either can not deliver or they charge you quite a lot of money for their remote hands.

As some of you may know, DreamHost is currently on the buggy side of working with Koken. It is documented on both sides of the pond, and so might get a fix eventually.. I unfortunately, didn't have time to wait, since my DH sub was up and didn't want to chance that it would take a year to iron out. I've moved over to GatorHost, which was recommended to me by another Koken user here...

Can't say what's what with it though, right now.. Because it could take a few weeks for them to totally move my domain over from DH. Right now, I'm in limbo. No website. Urgh... I'll update this when things get sorted.

I use https://www.namecheap.com/hosting/shared.aspx.
I had previously used them for domain registration, but I noticed that for their "Black Friday" sale they offered $5 hosting for the entire year! I did not hesitate to give it a try and it was well worth it.

At first Koken installed but did not work properly so I created a wordpress and just left it abandoned until just recently I tried Koken again and it works amazingly well. I recommend it.

I'm actually using a VPS at Digital Ocean for my Koken install (still in development), because I like to configure things myself and I enjoy maintaining the server. I also believe the freedom is worth the money (running a $20 droplet, resource overkill maybe? Nah!). Koken is a new project for me though, so far I've managed to get it working the way I want it to, still optimizing for performance though. This is my current server setup (also some additional things installed on server side, such as phpmyadmin, ufw etc):

VPS Specs
    - 2GB Memory
    - 2 CPUs
    - 40GB SSD
    - 3TB Transfer

Software
    - OS Ubuntu v16.04
    - PHP v7.0.13
    - MySQL v5.7.17
    - Apache v2.4.18
    - ImageMagick v6.8.9
    - FFMpeg v2.8.11
    - Memory Limit 256MB
    - Upload File Size Limit 64MB
    - EXIF/IPTC Supported

The only downside to this is that I can't blame anyone else when something brakes, nobody is fixing anything! :P

kenthhagstrom; I have a couple of questions for you if you don't mind. Are you using the Docker image, or have you removed that slight overhead by installing and running everything as their own services and daemons on the server itself? Secondly, if you've gone the more "Ops" route and are running everything individually, have you attempted to use and mount DigitalOcean's block-storage option as the storage folder for Koken, thus removing the need to base your droplet size on the number of photos and videos uploaded to Koken?

No Docker. Everything is installed individually as services and daemons.

lorenalexm wrote:Source of the post block-storage option

No, I don't believe I need it, I'm the only one using the server that has 40 GB hdd. My fresh install of everything is abut 2 Gb, which leaves me 38 gb free space... that's a lot of pictures.

I prefer the manual installation method as well, I prefer to have a dedicated environment and server for each production use-case. Docker is just overkill in my opinion for the needs of a Koken installation.

You have a very fair point in regards to the total space on the droplet. I tend to find myself going overboard far too often and attempt to build things out as if I am going to have to satisfy every worst-case scenario or scaling nightmare; I would save myself many headaches if I stopped fretting about the what-ifs.

Glad to hear that DigitalOcean is working well for you though, I have been very pleased with the platform since its inception!

I am glad to report that Siteground's shared hosting plans are supported.
They even have koken installable via softacolous!
Imagemagick and FFMpeg installed

But I also had the pleasure to try and install koken on a dedicated cloud server (using italian's Aruba cloud server infrastructure with their CHEAPEST option)
I followed a very well written guide (I have no particular experience) that I found here (its in french ...)
https://howto.wared.fr/installation-kok ... m-mariadb/
it uses nginx and MariaDB

Koken FLIES, I really got impressed by how fluid the backend is on a dedicated solution vs a shared hosting

Not cheap (from €8/month shared hosting), but Koken runs very smoothly for me on Yoorshop (https://www.yoorshop.hosting/?language=english).

As well as good service, the base package includes 2GB memory + 20 GB NVMe SSD 3D + LiteSpeed + Nginx + SSH + SSL + VPN + GD + imagick + cPanel + choice of IP address in 13 European countries or Canada or Singapore + option to install Koken via softacolous.
